How did POWER Sessions came to be?
As AÇEV, since 1995, we have developed and implemented multiple training programs for women with no literacy over the age of 15. The programs were based on the current and changing definiton of literacy. As we were striving for women to acquire the literacy skills that will ensure their participation in social life and improve their position in the family, we followed a scientific and holistic approach.
In line with our work towards women who cannot benefit from the right to education and the experiences we have gained, we positioned the importance of taking literacy as the most basic life skill that should be continously developed and supported as the focus of our work.
We have developed a new approach to support young women who are currently neither in employment nor in education or training to continue their education, since basic literacy is not sufficient to support 21st century life skills.
In 2016, we restructured our program under the name of POWER Sessions in order to strengthen young women and make sure they become more active in life with their increased number of life skills.
Within the scope of POWER Sessions, literacy is considered as a broad concept encompassing abilities that can respond to globalization, advances in communication technology, and economic and social transformations.
This program, helps empower individuals so that they can make the right decisions in economic and social matters and benefit from rights and services. It includes critical thinking and technology skills, as well as, topics, such as, working life, environmental awareness and health.
We have a content that gives women the most basic knowledge in many areas, from continuing their education to getting a start in business and using mathematics in daily life, from financial literacy, to human rights and climate change. With research studies we conduct before and after the program, we can monitor the transformation of our participants' lives.
